"Stand" (Rosa Parks February 4, 1913 - October 24, 2005)

Who would have thought that a simple act of not giving up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus December 1, 1955 would have resulted in such a dynamic change in America today? With the racism, segregation, and Jim Crow laws of the time, Rosa was tired of the treatment she and other African Americans received every day of their lives and because of that she took a "stand!"

It's sad, because in today's society, we are either so apathetic that we do nothing but talk a good game or we think it takes more than we have to give to initiate change when all it may require on our part is a simple act or courage and a desire to see things change.

This was so much bigger than the issue of a bus boycott however and it's because of her and others of the civil rights movement that I have many of the freedoms that I have today. (although we have a long way to go) It's so easy to forget, but today as I remember her and others who paved the way, I give thanks to God for their courage and perseverance.

I guess the important question is will her legacy and others compel me to make a difference, or will I continue to sit on the sidelines of life allowing our children to be killed, sent to jail and have babies? It's not a hard question.... Will you take a stand?

Word.... It was a bit disheartening to get that news this morning.... She was indeed a revolutionary!
