Delight Yourself in the Lord......

In my quiet time yesterday, I decided to read Psalm 37 in which I ended up concentrating on verse 4 which says Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. As I pondered on what it meant to delight myself in the Lord, which my bible commentary says is to experience a pleasure and joy in God's presence, I immediately knew that I was guilty of delighting myself in many things, people and activities over the past few months the Lord not being at the top of the list.

Yeah, I pray continually and I go to church, but when I thought about what it means to delight myself in the Lord I knew that I was coming up short. At that point I had to ask for forgiveness.

In order to delight yourself in Him we have to know Him and the only way we come to know Him is by spending time in his presence, reading and meditating on the word, praying and actively listening to what He has to say.

Brother Lawrence who was an awesome man of God (check out his book)

was a great example of a man who stayed in Gods presence. However, it wasn't about private time to him (although that was important) and it wasn't about reading the latest devotion to get him through the day. He testified to how it's necessary to be in constant prayer and in a continual state of communion with God which he believes keeps us humble and right before God. Not to mention it leaves little room for us to live in condemnation.

Anyway, I say I love the Lord so I guess I better get to delightin myself in Him and not because he promises to give me the desires of my heart (b/c this is not an activity where I will be able to manipulate God based on my works) but rather so I can come to know him more intimately and because God is just downright awesome (sometimes I loose sight of that fact)

Food for thought..
